Is the First IKEA in Borneo to be Opened in Sabah, Sarawak or Kalimantan?

If IKEA plans to open its first branch in Borneo – will it be in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei or Kalimantan in Indonesia?

In the ASEAN region, IKEA has stores in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. There are already rumours that IKEA is planning to open new stores in Vietnam and The Philippines.

Given the high demand of IKEA products in Borneo, which place do you think IKEA would choose to open its new store? Will it be:

  • IKEA in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
  • IKEA in Miri, Sarawak
  • IKEA in Kuching, Sarawak
  • IKEA in Brunei
  • IKEA in Kalimantan, Indonesia

Kota Kinabalu has always been the target for many retailers because of its booming commercial activities.

Meanwhile, Miri in Sarawak has good potential as well because of the economic activities in the area especially oil and gas.

Kuching on the other hand is the capital of Sarawak has a huge population with adequate purchasing power.

Brunei is the richest country in Borneo but population may be to small to sustain IKEA’s business.

Kalimantan has the biggest population in Borneo but transportation systems may affect logistics.

In my opinion, IKEA should choose either Miri or Kota Kinabalu if they were to open a new store in Borneo as these two cities potentially may be able to cover customers from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei.

Customers from the Southern Philippines may be able to fly to KK or Miri to bring IKEA back to their country.

We believe there will be a continuous rising demands for orders from Borneo because of the booming population and steady growth in these areas.

There’s no news or plans that IKEA is coming to Borneo but it’s good to get the news out there so that IKEA can include this plan in their expansion roadmap in Southeast Asia.
